The Weight of Hair

02.10.2026 - 28.02.2027
Pickle Underground, New Westminster, BC, Canada

An intimate part of the body.
A public part of the body.
A repository of bodily memory and a means of self-expression.
An instrument of control and the destruction of identity.

Hair grows with the body, accumulating traces of time, experience, and change. Yet it can also exist apart from it.

Hair provokes contradictory reactions: admiration while it remains part of the human body, and disgust once it is separated from it. At the same time, the hair of a child or a loved one can evoke tenderness and deeply personal memories.

Through hair, society enforces gender, cultural identity, and social status. It becomes an object of social control, while ideas of what constitutes “acceptable” hair reinforce broader systems of power over the body.

These systems of control find their most extreme expression in situations of violence and war. The forced cutting of hair becomes a means of asserting power over the body, humiliating the individual and erasing identity.

The exhibition approaches hair as a paradox: a part of the body that is at once deeply personal and profoundly public. Presented within a private apartment, the exhibition extends this same tension into space, where the boundary between the personal and the public also becomes unstable.
